Nicotine Kiss

Walker has made a lot of friends--and more than a few enemies--in his years as a detective in Detroit, but he has never had to deal with quite the trouble he finds when he agrees to grant the death-bed wish of Beryl Garnet. Beryl was a successful madam who had a son long ago; she asks Walker to make sure that her son gets her ashes when she's gone.

Never Street-- A wife hires Walker to find her husband, an old-movie buff who may have gone off to lead the life of a 1940s noir hero. As the detective delves deeper, the case begins to resemble the plot of a classic Hollywood melodrama, with one important difference: When the lights come up, the bodies stay dead.

Estleman is an acknowledged master of the short story. Ten of his very best starring Amos Walker appear in

GENERAL MURDERS
HOUGHTON MIFFLIN . 1988

This collection provides a "crash" course in Detroit, cars, guns, cops, and crooks, and includes the 1985 Shamus Award winning story, "Eight Mile and Dequindre."

After the publication of General Murders, another Amos Walker short story won the Shamus Award for Best PI Short Story (1988). Titled "The Crooked Way," it can be found in Dark Crimes: Great Noir Fiction From the '40s to the '90s.
