It's not the Gas City
in the novel, and the similarities stop after you get past the
fact that the town's mayor used to be the police chief.
It all started with
the name on the water tower you see in the photo (above), which
is located at Exit 59 off U.S. 69 between the Michigan border
and Indianapolis. Every time we'd pass that exit, Loren would
comment on the name. It came as no surprise when he announced
that he was going to use the name for a book title (even though
his Gas City is nothing like the Indiana town).
Several months later,
when he received an official-looking envelope from the Gas City
offices of Mayor Larry Leach, Estleman said "Uh-oh."
The enclosed letter, however, was warm and inviting. Mayor Leach
had seen mention of the novel, and wondered if Mr. Estleman would
consider visiting the town for a speak and sign? "Absolutely."
It was a fantastic weekend!
Loren was given a key to the city, and we won't soon forget the
warm welcome we received from everyone. Mayor Larry Leach and
his wife, Patty, were amazing hosts. During great meals, we got
to know several wonderful folks who work in the town offices.
The astounding sense of community portrayed by the citizens was
infectious.
Our friends, author
Larry Sweazy and his wife, Rose, drove up from Indy for the event.
The Gas City folks happily included them in an evening of great
food, new friends, and fun times to cap off the weekend.

Loren spoke to a packed house, then signed copies of his novel. |
